Mechanical Engineering

About the Branch

Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest branch in Thiagarajar polytechnic college. This oldest and the largest department aims at imparting high-quality education in Mechanical Engineering through practical and theoretical training. The department is well set to create and maintain an environment which will facilitate the effective teaching-learning process for the faculty and students, thus moulding smart and dynamic mechanical engineering diploma holders, who will shoulder real-life engineering problems by applying practical and theoretical knowledge along with various management tools and professional ethics.Mechanical engineering is used in almost every aspect of everyday life, from cell phones and biomedical devices to flights and power plants. Mechanical engineers deal with economic problems as well as technical issues, ranging from the expense of a single product to the economic impact of a manufacturing plant. Mechanical engineers are also employed in sales and engineering management. The Department has well-equipped laboratories and computing facilities, with the latest technology and syllabus requirements. Well qualified faculty and skilled supporting staff are the other strengths of the department.

Vision

To produce competent professionals by impartinghigh quality education and training in Engineeringand Technology to meet the industrial requirements inglobal standard and according to societal demands.

...
Mission
  • To provide quality education through state of the artinfrastructure and competent teaching faculty.
  • To produce technically competent professionals withmoral and ethical values.
  • To participate in the development in accordance withsocietal demands through entrepreneurship, industryinteraction and excellent communication.
Major Domain Areas in the Programme

Mechanical Engineering deals with the properties of steam and thermal energy. Boilers, Steam engines, refrigerators, air conditioners, heat engines and IC engines are the applications of this subject. Material strength and metallurgy covers the application and selection of engineering materials and in heart treatment process. The subject Machine Design deals the designing of machine parts by considering the force. Various manufacturing techniques and fabrication methods are studied in manufacturing process. Advanced production process deals with the modern machines like CNC, FMS and Robotics, apart from the conventional machines like lathe, grinding, milling etc. Automobile engineering subject covers the entire vehicle mechanism and modern development in automobile industry. Power plant engineering subject teaches various power production units and help to calculate the power consumption. One of the major areas is the machine drawing and the study of engineering graphics. General workshop and Advance machine tool laboratory helps the students to practice in various machine tools as well as skill development. Material testing Lab and Electrical technology labs are advantageous to the students to practice to testing the materials and connecting the electrical equipment. Hydraulics lab and Heat Engine labs are providing the practical knowledge about these areas. There are provisions to practice Servicing and Maintenance of mechanical devices in the concerned laboratories. Computer aided design cover the areas of computer drafting in machine designing and drawing. In-plant training and industrial visits helps the students to understand the real time situations in industry.

Job prospects

Diploma in Mechanical Engineering is the essential qualification for placing in middle level managerial job like supervisors in industry. Machine tool industry, Automobile industry, Process industries, Fabrication field, Power plants, Rubber manufacturing industry, Material testing laboratories, Cadd design centers, Paper industry, Railway, Shipyard are some of the fields where the mechanical diploma engineers can be placed. Both Central and State govt. are providing job facilities for diploma holders in mechanical engineering as workshop instructor in technical education, draughtsman in various departments, like Legal metallurgy, VSSC etc.

Prospects for higher studies

The diploma students can enter directly into the third semester in B.Tech through lateral entry scheme. There is provision for doing part time B.Tech in many engineering colleges.
